What is CPD?
Continuing professional development (CPD) is the intentional maintenance and development of the knowledge and skills needed to perform in a professional context. This could mean honing current skills, it could mean developing them to a new level, or it could mean learning new ones that will allow an employee’s job role to expand or prepare them for potential promotion.
Continuing professional development (CPD) has a wide range of benefits for individuals, organizations and industries undertaking CPD, including:
- Keeping skills and knowledge up to date
- Career progression
- A professional sense of direction
- Professional standards of qualifications and registrations are maintained
- Confidence and credibility are built and enhanced

How are CPD points calculated?
The points are calculated by multiplying the number of hours you spend on the activity by the CPD credit value assigned to that activity. It is considered across all industries that CPD points, units and credits all relate to the same thing, CPD Hours. CPD hours/points for all our activities have been assigned as part of our accreditation by CPD Standards Office.
Who needs CPD?
Across the world, CPD is expected of most individual professionals in most sectors. In some countries and within some professions, however, the wording might change. You will see professional development, continuing education, continuing medical education, and other terms being used to refer to CPD, but ultimately, it is the exact same concept.
Employers also increasingly expect their staff to undertake CPD. Employers will often support with CPD, and may even contribute to CPD plans. However, the responsibility is very much with the individual to source CPD training activities that meet their personal learning needs and objectives.
